#TBT: Donington 1992 – Race 1
Vintage at its best, on a classic racetrack. What’s not to like?
The new additions to the Classics section on WorldSBK.com are all just what the name suggests, so this Throwback Thursday sees us revisit Donington, and the first Superbike Race at the British track in 1992.
With a host of manufacturers pushing hard to conquer the parkland circuit, it was Fabrizio Pirovano who gave Yamaha the early lead, with the Italian taking it off the line and then battling to keep it. An unexpected fall from Carl Fogarty saw the British legend –before he was such a thing - sidelined after having set the fastest lap, and it was left to Scott Russell, Robert Phillis and Raymond Roche to chase Italian Pirovano down.
The Race was a milestone for a number of Carl Fogarty-related reasons: it was the Brit’s first pole, first front row and the first time he had set a fastest lap: the first steps towards building the legend of the rider we know today. Although not ending in a win, it marked an important point in his career.
Now back to the track action: did anyone chase down Pirovano by the time the chequered flag came out? Or did the Italian cross the line ahead? Check out the Race and find out, reliving a slice of WorldSBK history - buy a videopass and head over to the Classics section to enjoy a look back at another era.
